Moderate 4.5 quake hits near Kos Town, Dodecanese, South Aegean, Greece

A magnitude 4.5 earthquake near Kos Town, Dodecanese, South Aegean, Greece, was reported only 8 minutes ago by the National Observatory of Athens (NOA), considered the main national agency that monitors seismic activity in Greece. The earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 10 km beneath the epicenter in the afternoon on Thursday 22 July 2021 at 5:15 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.

A second report was later issued by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), which listed it as a magnitude 4.5 earthquake as well. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 3.5.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.

Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Kalymnos (pop. 12,300) located 65 km from the epicenter, Bodrum (pop. 39,300) 79 km away, and Rhodes (pop. 56,100) 100 km away.
