Significant 5.0 quake hits near Tokushima, Tokushima Shi, Japan

5.0 quake 31 Jul 1:09 pm (GMT +9)

A magnitude 5.0 earthquake near Tokushima, Tokushima Shi, Japan, was reported only 11 minutes ago by Japan's National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience (NIED), considered the main national agency that monitors seismic activity in this part of the world. The earthquake occurred at a moderately shallow depth of 44.1 km beneath the epicenter around noon on Saturday 31 July 2021 at 1:09 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 4.5 earthquake.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Anan (pop. 55,400) located 14 km from the epicenter, Komatsushimachō (pop. 42,600) 23 km away, Tokushima (pop. 267,300) 31 km away, Ishii (pop. 26,400) 35 km away, Kamojimachō-jōgejima (pop. 24,400) 40 km away, Narutochō-mitsuishi (pop. 64,100) 45 km away, Minato (pop. 375,300) 67 km away, and Takamatsu (pop. 334,200) 80 km away.
