Just 27 minutes ago, a 4.2-magnitude earthquake struck near Miahuatlan de Porfirio Diaz, Miahuatlán de Porfirio Díaz, Oaxaca, Mexico. The tremor was recorded early evening on Tuesday 3 August 2021 at 6:44 pm local time, at a shallow depth of 28 km below the surface.
The event was filed by Mexico's National Seismological Service (SSN), the first seismological agency to report it.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Barrio Santa Lucia (pop. 35) located 4 km from the epicenter, San Miguel Suchixtepec (pop. 1,800) 4 km away, San Cristobal (pop. 4,100) 24 km away, and Miahuatlan de Porfirio Diaz (pop. 23,900) 26 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Huatulco (pop. 7,400) located 37 km from the epicenter, San Pedro Pochutla (pop. 13,700) 42 km away, Crucecita (pop. 15,100) 55 km away, and Puerto Escondido (pop. 25,900) 68 km away.
