Moderate magnitude 4.5 earthquake 45 km southeast of Ōita, Japan

An earthquake of magnitude 4.5 occurred only 14 minutes ago 45 km southeast of Ōita, Japan, Japan's National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience (NIED) reported.
The quake hit at a moderately shallow depth of 46 km beneath the epicenter near Ōita, Ōita City, Oita, Japan, in the morning on Sunday, September 12th, 2021, at 11:17 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.1.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.

Weak shaking might have been felt in Tsukumiura (pop. 21,700) located 19 km from the epicenter, Usuki (pop. 35,000) 24 km away, Saiki (pop. 49,100) 25 km away, Tsurusaki (pop. 77,000) 37 km away, and Ōita (pop. 448,900) 45 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Uwajima (pop. 59,000) located 48 km from the epicenter, Beppu (pop. 125,100) 55 km away, and Ōzu (pop. 38,800) 62 km away.
