Magnitude 3.9 earthquake strikes near Carlsbad, Eddy County, New Mexico, USA

The United States Geological Survey reported a magnitude 3.9 quake in the United States near Carlsbad, Eddy County, New Mexico, only 18 minutes ago. The earthquake hit in the morning on Sunday, September 12th, 2021, at 8:30 am local time at a very shallow depth of 4.3 miles. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 3.8.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Toyah (pop. 98) located 33 miles from the epicenter, Pecos (pop. 9,500) 46 miles away, and Carlsbad (pop. 29,000) 56 miles away.
