A shallow magnitude 4.4 earthquake was reported late at night near Illapel, Provincia de Choapa, Coquimbo Region, Chile.

According to the United States Geological Survey, the quake hit on Monday, September 13th, 2021, at 11:12 pm local time at a shallow depth of 10 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), which listed it as a magnitude 4.6 earthquake. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 4.6.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Illapel (pop. 22,800) located 86 km from the epicenter.
