Moderate magnitude 4.2 quake hits 33 km northwest of Arona, Spain late at night

A magnitude 4.2 earthquake near Arona, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain, was reported only 8 minutes ago by Spain's Instituto Geográfico Nacional (IGN), considered the main national agency that monitors seismic activity in this part of the world. The earthquake occurred at a very shallow depth of 5 km beneath the epicenter late at night on Wednesday, November 17th, 2021, at 10:58 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.2 as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Masca (pop. 150) located 7 km from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Guia de Isora (pop. 20,500) located 18 km from the epicenter, Icod de los Vinos (pop. 24,000) 21 km away, Adeje (pop. 43,200) 28 km away, Arona (pop. 78,600) 33 km away, Realejo Alto (pop. 36,000) 33 km away, Los Realejos (pop. 37,600) 34 km away, and La Orotava (pop. 41,200) 40 km away.

Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include San Cristobal de La Laguna (pop. 150,700) located 62 km from the epicenter, and Tenerife (pop. 222,400) 67 km away.
