Moderate magnitude 4.7 quake hits 27 km north of Esmeraldas, Ecuador late at night

The Institute of Geophysics of the National Polytechnic School in Quito (IGEPN) reported a magnitude 4.7 quake in Ecuador near Esmeraldas, Cantón Esmeraldas, Provincia de Esmeraldas, only 14 minutes ago. The earthquake hit late at night on Wednesday, November 17th, 2021, at 11:13 pm local time at a very shallow depth of 5 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.

Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.6.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Esmeraldas (pop. 165,200) located 27 km from the epicenter, Valdez (pop. 11,400) 75 km away, and Muisne (pop. 13,400) 77 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Pampanal de Bolivar (pop. 1,100) located 87 km from the epicenter, San Lorenzo de Esmeraldas (pop. 20,200) 92 km away, and Rosa Zarate (pop. 42,100) 99 km away.
