The event was filed by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the first seismological agency to report it.
A second report was later issued by Japan's National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience (NIED), which listed it as a magnitude 4.2 earthquake.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Ishinomaki (pop. 117,200) located 77 km from the epicenter, Yamoto (pop. 32,000) 83 km away, Schiogama (pop. 59,500) 92 km away, and Matsushima (pop. 16,400) 92 km away. In Rifu (pop. 35,000, 97 km away), and Wakuya (pop. 18,300, 97 km away), the quake was probably not felt.
