A moderately shallow magnitude 4.2 earthquake was reported in the morning near Kuril'sk, Sakhalin Oblast, Russia.

According to the United States Geological Survey, the quake hit on Thursday, August 4th, 2022, at 10:14 am local time at a moderately shallow depth of 69 km. Magnitude and other quake parameters can still change in the coming hours as the agency continues to process seismic data.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake which listed the quake at magnitude 4.2 as well. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 4.2.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Kuril'sk (pop. 1,700) located 80 km from the epicenter.
