Magnitude 5.4 earthquake strikes near Lata, Santa Cruz Islands, Temotu Province, Solomon Islands

Just 23 minutes ago, a 5.4-magnitude earthquake struck near Lata, Santa Cruz Islands, Temotu Province, Solomon Islands. The tremor was recorded early morning on Sunday, August 21st, 2022, at 4:12 am local time, at an intermediate depth of 142 km below the surface.

The event was filed by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the first seismological agency to report it.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from Geoscience Australia (GeoAu) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.1.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Lata (pop. 550) located 107 km from the epicenter.
