Italy's National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) reported a magnitude 4.1 quake in Italy near Ascoli Piceno, The Marches, only 20 minutes ago. The earthquake hit around noon on Thursday, September 22nd, 2022, at 12:24 pm local time at a shallow depth of 23.9 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.2. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 4.2, and the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 4.2.

Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Valli (pop. 350) located 5 km from the epicenter, Ascoli Piceno (pop. 41,700) 8 km away, Teramo (pop. 36,100) 16 km away, San Benedetto del Tronto (pop. 45,900) 29 km away, and Giulianova (pop. 20,500) 29 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Roseto degli Abruzzi (pop. 16,500) located 35 km from the epicenter, L'Aquila (pop. 33,700) 52 km away, Montesilvano Marina (pop. 46,000) 53 km away, and Pescara (pop. 116,600) 61 km away.
