Moderate magnitude 4.8 earthquake 8 km northeast of Inashiki, Japan

An intermediate magnitude 4.8 earthquake was reported in the morning near Inashiki, Inashiki-shi, Ibaraki, Japan.

According to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the quake hit on Friday, September 23rd, 2022, at 9:53 am local time at an intermediate depth of 90 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from France's Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.1. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 5.0, and the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 5.0.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Inashiki (pop. 47,000) located 8 km from the epicenter, Ami (pop. 48,300) 14 km away, Naka (pop. 46,800) 18 km away, Ryūgasaki (pop. 85,800) 21 km away, Ushiku (pop. 80,000) 21 km away, Torite (pop. 80,700) 28 km away, and Tsukuba (pop. 175,600) 31 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Mito (pop. 246,500) located 38 km from the epicenter, Tokyo (pop. 8,336,600) 71 km away, and Yokohama (pop. 3,574,400) 91 km away.
