A very shallow magnitude 2.9 earthquake was reported in the morning near Merredin, Western Australia, Australia.
According to Geoscience Australia (GeoAu), the quake hit on Monday, November 14th, 2022, at 11:35 am local time at a very shallow depth of 1.7 miles. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, which listed it as a magnitude 2.9 earthquake as well. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 2.9.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.

Weak shaking might have been felt in Lake Brown (pop. 13) located 4 miles from the epicenter.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Wilgoyne (pop. 40) located 9 miles from the epicenter, Mukinbudin (pop. 350) 11 miles away, Warralakin (pop. 19) 15 miles away, and Wattoning (pop. 20) 15 miles away. In Talgomine (pop. 26, 21 miles away), Bonnie Rock (pop. 43, 26 miles away), Bencubbin (pop. 230, 32 miles away), and Merredin (pop. 2,900, 40 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
