Significant magnitude 5.1 earthquake 40 km east of Talca, Chile

According to preliminary data, the quake was located at an intermediate depth of 78 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, which listed it as a magnitude 5.2 earthquake. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 5.2.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in San Clemente (pop. 13,700) located 29 km from the epicenter, Molina (pop. 28,800) 32 km away, Talca (pop. 197,500) 40 km away, Curico (pop. 102,400) 46 km away, San Javier de Loncomilla (pop. 22,400) 51 km away, Linares (pop. 69,500) 60 km away, Santa Cruz (pop. 33,300) 86 km away, and Parral (pop. 26,900) 99 km away.
