Significant 5.2 quake hits near Chimbote, Provincia de Santa, Ancash, Peru

A shallow magnitude 5.2 earthquake was reported early afternoon near Chimbote, Provincia de Santa, Ancash, Peru.
According to the Institute of Geophysics of the National Polytechnic School in Quito (IGEPN), the quake hit on Wednesday, November 23rd, 2022, at 3:02 pm local time at a shallow depth of 10 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Puerto Santa (pop. 14,100) located 51 km from the epicenter, Coishco (pop. 15,100) 54 km away, Chimbote (pop. 317,000) 57 km away, Puente Viru (pop. 9,000) 83 km away, Victor Raul (pop. 8,400) 83 km away, Viru (pop. 20,800) 85 km away, Salaverry (pop. 10,100) 99 km away, and Trujillo (pop. 747,500) 110 km away.
