A very shallow magnitude 4.0 earthquake was reported early morning near Paphos, Cyprus.
According to the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, the quake hit on Thursday, November 24th, 2022, at 2:33 am local time at a very shallow depth of 2 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the Kandilli Oservatory and Earthquake Research Institute in Istanbul (KOERI-RETMC), which listed it as a magnitude 4.1 earthquake. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the National Observatory of Athens (NOA) at magnitude 3.9, and the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 4.0.

Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should have been widely felt by almost everyone in the area of the epicenter. It might have caused light to moderate damage.
Moderate shaking probably occurred in Choletria (pop. 250) located 1 km from the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Konia (pop. 2,200) located 14 km from the epicenter, Geroskipou (pop. 8,300) 15 km away, Paphos (pop. 36,000) 17 km away, Empa (pop. 4,900) 17 km away, Chloraka (pop. 3,600) 19 km away, and Kissonerga (pop. 2,000) 20 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Limassol (pop. 154,000) located 40 km from the epicenter, Strovolos (pop. 67,900) 78 km away, and Nicosia (pop. 200,500) 82 km away.
