A shallow magnitude 2.3 earthquake was reported in the morning near Carson, Los Angeles County, California, USA.
According to the United States Geological Survey, the quake hit on Saturday, March 4th, 2023, at 10:52 am local time at a shallow depth of 13 miles. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 2.3 as well. Other agencies reporting the same quake include The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS) at magnitude 2.3, and the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 2.3.

According to preliminary calculations, we do not expect that the quake was felt by many people and did not cause any damage. In West Rancho Dominguez (pop. 5,700, 2 miles away), Carson (pop. 93,300, 2 miles away), Gardena (pop. 60,400, 3 miles away), Compton (pop. 98,500, 4 miles away), Torrance (pop. 148,500, 5 miles away), Lynwood (pop. 72,000, 6 miles away), Hawthorne (pop. 88,500, 6 miles away), South Gate (pop. 96,400, 7 miles away), Long Beach (pop. 474,100, 8 miles away), and Los Angeles (pop. 3,971,900, 13 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
