Significant earthquake of magnitude 5.1 reported 105 km east of Lata, Solomon Islands

The quake hit at a very shallow depth of 9.3 km beneath the epicenter near Lata, Santa Cruz Islands, Temotu Province, Solomon Islands, in the morning on Monday, March 13th, 2023, at 7:56 am local time. Magnitude and other quake parameters can still change in the coming hours as the agency continues to process seismic data.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from Geoscience Australia (GeoAu) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.2. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 5.1, and the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 5.1.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Lata (pop. 550) located 105 km from the epicenter.
