The United States Geological Survey reported a magnitude 3.8 quake in the United States near Trinidad, Las Animas County, Colorado, only 23 minutes ago. The earthquake hit early morning on Sunday, March 19th, 2023, at 5:10 am local time at a shallow depth of 7.6 miles. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, which listed it as a magnitude 3.8 earthquake as well. A third agency, The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS), reported the same quake at magnitude 3.8.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.

Weak shaking might have been felt in El Moro (pop. 220) located 2 miles from the epicenter, and Trinidad (pop. 8,200) 6 miles away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Raton (pop. 6,200) located 23 miles from the epicenter, Willow Springs (pop. 6,200) 23 miles away, and Walsenburg (pop. 2,900) 32 miles away. In Colorado City (pop. 2,200, 53 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
If you felt it, report it through our site or app right now!
