A massive earthquake hit near Nenda Island (Solomon Islands) this morning and caused a regional tsunami that severely hit the Santa Cruz islands.
The tsunami, reportedly about 0.9-1.1 m high on Nenda Island and reaching up to 500 m inland in places, killed and injured several people and devastated villages near the shoreline.
The earthquake followed a series of magnitude 5-6 earthquakes in the same area during the past week. Hundreds of aftershocks have and are still occurring.
