Major mag. 7.9 earthquake - 292km SE of Kodiak, Alaska on Tuesday, 23 January 2018 - information

The earthquake was caused by strike slip faulting within the shallow lithosphere of the Pacific plate, which in this area is converging with the North America plate at a rate of approximately 59 mm/yr towards the north-northwest.
According to USGS the quake was a result of faulting that occurred on a steeply dipping fault striking either west-southwest (left lateral) or north-northwest (right lateral).

Williamsville, NY 14221 / Light shaking (MMI IV) : I do not know for sure this earthquake is what I felt. About 4:30-4:50 am est I was awoken by my outside facing bedroom wall shaking in my hands, as I sleep with my hands above my head on the wall and a low rumbling noise. I could feel the wall moving in my hands and hear a low rumbling noise and creaking for about 10 seconds. I thought we were having an earthquake. Not sure if aftershocks were this far out though.

We probably felt shaking for 20-30 seconds, from the first moment until it wad completely gone. Of that, maybe 10 seconds of it was moderate.
