Strong mag. 5.6 Earthquake - 5.4 km south of Fushë-Krujë, Durres, Albania, on Saturday, Sep 21, 2019, at 04:04 pm (Tirane time)

A strong magnitude 5.6 earthquake hit 5.4 km (3.4 mi) away from Fushë-Krujë, Durres,  Albania, in the afternoon of Saturday, Sep 21, 2019 at 4.04 pm local time (Europe/Tirane GMT +2). The quake had a very shallow depth of 19 km (12 mi) and was felt over a large region. The shallow depth of the quake caused it to be felt more strongly near the epicenter than a deeper quake of similar magnitude would.

What is Intensity and the Mercalli Intensity Scale?

The amount of shaking that occurs on the surface due to an earthquake is called the intensity. It is commonly measured on the so-called Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale (MMI) ranging from 1 (not felt) to 10 (extreme shaking), and given in Roman numerals as I,II,...IX, X, and often displayed with color codes ranging from light blue to dark red.
Earthquake intensity depends mainly on the magnitude and depth of the quake as well as the distance from the epicenter: The further away, the less shaking intensity occurs.

32 aftershocks for this quake

For this earthquake, 32 aftershocks have been detected so far. The strongest was a magnitude 3.1 quake that hit 8 hours after the mainshock in 11.9 km (7 mi) distance, in 17 km northeast of Durres, Durres, Albania, on Sunday, Sep 22, 2019 on 12:15 am (Tirane local time GMT +2).
The most recent aftershock occurred 4 years ago 2.6 km north of Tirana, Tirana, Albania, and had a magnitude of 2.1.

What are aftershocks?

Larger earthquakes (above magnitude 5 or so) such as this one are usually followed by smaller ones known as aftershocks that occur in the same area during the days, weeks, months or even years after the main shock.

What about this quake?

Based on its magnitude, the fault that was active during the quake likely ruptured beneath a surface of approx. 40 km2 (=15 sqare miles) as a first-order estimate. The length of the rupture zone thus was probably around 11 km (7 mi).

Earthquake statistics

Average number of earthquakes

Based on data from the past 10 years and our earthquake archive back to 1900, there are about 4,100 quakes on average per year in the area near the epicenter of this quake (within 100 km/61 mi):
  • Mag. 6 or higher: 0.06 quakes per year (or 1 quake every 17.9 years)
  • Mag. 5 or higher: 0.61 quakes per year (or 1 quake every 1.7 years)
  • Mag. 4 or higher: 7.6 quakes per year
  • Mag. 3 or higher: 41 quakes per year
  • Mag. 2 or higher: 317 quakes per year (or 26.4 quakes per month)
  • Mag. 1 or higher: 388 quakes per year (or 32.3 quakes per month)
The area where this quake occurred has a high level of seismic activity. It has had at least 7 quakes above magnitude 6 since 1900, which suggests that larger earthquakes of this size occur infrequently, probably on average approximately every 15 to 20 years.

Strongest in 32 years

The earthquake was the strongest to hit this part of  Albania in over 32 years. Earlier, the last quake of equal or greater strength near the present epicenter had been a magnitude 5.9 earthquake on Saturday, Jan 9, 1988, at 03:02 am local time (Europe/Tirane GMT +2) in 22 km (13 mi) distance to the south:

The strongest-ever (since 1900) recorded quake in this area measured magnitude 6.9. It had occurred 45 years ago earlier, on Sunday, Apr 15, 1979, at 08:19 am local time (Europe/Podgorica GMT +2) in Bar,  Montenegro:

Support us - Help us upgrade our services!

We truly love working to bring you the latest volcano and earthquake data from around the world. Maintaining our website and our free apps does require, however, considerable time and resources.
We need financing to increase hard- and software capacity as well as support our editor team. We're aiming to achieve uninterrupted service wherever an earthquake or volcano eruption unfolds, and your donations can make it happen! Every donation will be highly appreciated. If you find the information useful and would like to support our team in integrating further features, write great content, and in upgrading our soft- and hardware, please make a donation (PayPal or Online credit card payment).

Planned features:
  • Improved multilanguage support
  • Tsunami alerts
  • Faster responsiveness
Thanks to your past donations, these features have been added recently:
  • Design upgrade
  • Detailed quake stats
  • Additional seismic data sources
Download and Upgrade the Volcanoes & Earthquakes app to get one of the fastest seismic and volcano alerts online:
