Shake map of last evening's quake in Costa Rica
A moderately strong earthquake hit 24 km beneath Costa Rica's Pacific coast at 3:50 pm local time yesterday afternoon. The epicenter was located approx. 12 km SW of Jaco town, Garabito, Puntarenas.
At magnitude 6, it was a strong quake, but fortunately, no significant damage was reported except objects falling from supermarket shelves etc. Its depth and distance from the coast prevented significant damage to occur, although in the immediate coastal areas, shaking was perceived as moderate to even strong.
Beyond the vicinity of the epicenter, the tremor was felt as weak shaking all over Costa Rica and significant parts of bordering Nicaragua and Panama.
Teconically, the quake was a result of the subduction of the Cocos plate under the Caribbean plate, at a rate of 75 mm per year in NE direction. Larger quakes are common in this and other subduction zones.
A much larger quake of magnitude 7.6 had occurred 8 years ago on 05 Sep 2012 occurred in the same area only 86 km to the NW.
