Strong quake at the the tectonic boundary between Africa and Antarctica
A strong magnitude 6.2 quake occurred on the evening of 26 Sep approx. 1922 km SE of Cape Town, South Afric, in the southwestern Indian Ocean.
The quake occurred at the active divergent plate boundary separating the African and Antarctic plates, which probably now have moved a few cm further apart as a consequence.
Very light shaking was reported felt by some observers in southern South Africa.

1935.1 km NW of epicenter [Map] / Weak shaking (MMI III) / single lateral shake / very short : Felt like an explosion not a quake. Single shockwave that rocked the house. We all thought the local oil refinery had experienced an explosion. Felt like a pulse of sound. | 63 users found this interesting.

High Level Road, Green Point (1927.9 km NW of epicenter) [Map] / Very weak shaking (MMI II) / 5-10 s : Deep bass rumbling and air felt as if it was vibrating through my chest. We did not experience objects moving though. Fascinating that the sense of something being wrong was not altogether incorrect.   • MMI III. Initial cracking bass sound corresponding to a distant explosion. This was followed by two pulsing waves of energy causing slight rattling of glass-like furniture. Total duration less than 5 seconds.

Brackenfell (1919.2 km NW of epicenter) [Map] / Weak shaking (MMI III) / rattling, vibrating / 5-10 s : Never felt something like this before. Sitting on couch, sounded like industrial aircon being turned on. Clearly felt vibrations for a xouple of seconds. | 35 users found this interesting.

  • Protea heights - felt shaking/rumble for a few seconds. Dogs very upset. Roof and ceiling fan was shaking.
  • Same experience in Burgundy Estate, Cape Town. Thought there may have been another explosion at the refinery but then found out that it was this earthquake.

We felt the effects at about 20:55pm. Sounded like the roar of thunder and then the windows and roof tiles started to tremble. There were two roars (like thunder). We at first thought it to be an explosion at a refinery 30km away, but then got the news that it was a shake. Our first ever and an eary experience. Bloubergstrand. (1932.9 km NW of epicenter) [Map] / Strong shaking (MMI VI) / complex motion difficult to describe / 2-5 s : I was at home. It sounded like rolling thunder coming closer and getting louder. Then a sound like a loud explosion. I thought it was the refinery in the area that exploded. With the explosion sound came the shaking of the house. It lasted for a few seconds and it went quiet. There is construction on a Main road less than 10M away so i though it might be them moving muliple Road rollers as they shake and vibrate the ground when passing. Many neighbours looked off the balconies wondering what had just happened.
