Very strong magnitude 6.2 earthquake at 10 km depth

Strong quake at the the tectonic boundary between Africa and Antarctica
A strong magnitude 6.2 quake occurred on the evening of 26 Sep approx. 1922 km SE of Cape Town, South Afric, in the southwestern Indian Ocean.
The quake occurred at the active divergent plate boundary separating the African and Antarctic plates, which probably now have moved a few cm further apart as a consequence.
Very light shaking was reported felt by some observers in southern South Africa.

Cape Town, Kraaifontein (1920.8 km NW of epicenter) [Map] / not felt / 2-5 s : Was sitting in my bed reading and heard two loud consecutive bangs which sounded as loud as thunder but the duration of the sound was about 1 to 2 seconds longer than thunder sounds. | 4 users found this interesting.

Muizenberg, Cape Town. I was surfing.   • There was a 3.6 earthquake here in Massachusetts two days ago (Sunday November 8, 2020) which I only found out about today, however hours after that earthquake when I was surfing my board kept “vibrating“ almost like a plane was flying low over it or that there was something in the water making it buzz but neither of those things were present. Once I heard about the earthquake I’m wondering if what I felt was aftershocks.

  • Living in Brakenfell/Bellville boundaries felt the tremor about 8.20pm our time. Thought it was a tremor but discounted it as a large truck. Vibration and loud noise. I've been in various quakes and tremors so wasn't afraid. Who remembers the big one in the 60's/70's Tulbach,Ceres etc
