5.9 quake 25 km E of Salvacion, Philippines, 16 Nov 6.37 am (GMT +8)
5.9 quake 25 km E of Salvacion, Philippines, 16 Nov 6.37 am (GMT +8)
Philippines was shaken near the town of Marihatag by an earthquake of magnitude 5.9 only 7 minutes ago, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) reported.
The quake hit at a shallow depth of 10 km beneath the epicenter early morning on Monday 16 November 2020 at 6.37 am local time. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 6.1 earthquake.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should have been felt by everybody in the area of the epicenter. In those areas, dangerous ground shaking occurred with the potential to inflict moderate to heavy damage to buildings and other infrastructure. Towns or cities where the quake likely caused strong ground shaking include
Moderate shaking probably occurred in Salvacion (pop. 2,100) located 25 km from the epicenter, Gamut (pop. 3,500) 27 km away, Aras-asan (pop. 5,100) 27 km away, and Unidad (pop. 3,300) 27 km away.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Butuan (pop. 309,700) located 102 km from the epicenter, Libertad (pop. 250,400) 106 km away, and Cagayan de Oro (pop. 445,100) 197 km away.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you're in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
