6.0 quake 16 km south of Chiba, Japan, Oct 7, 2021 10:41 pm (GMT +9)
Just 25 minutes ago, a 6.0-magnitude earthquake struck near Chiba, Chiba-shi, Japan. The tremor was recorded late at night on Thursday, October 7th, 2021, at 10:41 pm local time, at a moderately shallow depth of 61 km below the surface.
The event was filed by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), the first seismological agency to report it.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from Geoscience Australia (GeoAu) which listed the quake at magnitude 6.0 as well. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the United States Geological Survey at magnitude 5.9, France's Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS) at magnitude 6.2, Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency at magnitude 5.8, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 5.9, and Japan's National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience (NIED) at magnitude 6.4.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Ichihara (pop. 283,500) located 10 km from the epicenter, Mobara (pop. 97,300) 12 km away, Ōami (pop. 53,200) 13 km away, Chiba (pop. 919,700) 16 km away, Tōgane (pop. 66,300) 19 km away, Yotsukaidō (pop. 86,700) 20 km away, Yachimata (pop. 83,300) 24 km away, Kisarazu (pop. 122,500) 24 km away, Yokohama (pop. 3,574,400) 48 km away, and Tokyo (pop. 8,336,600) 50 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you're in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.

Support us - Help us upgrade our services!

We truly love working to bring you the latest volcano and earthquake data from around the world. Maintaining our website and our free apps does require, however, considerable time and resources.
We need financing to increase hard- and software capacity as well as support our editor team. We're aiming to achieve uninterrupted service wherever an earthquake or volcano eruption unfolds, and your donations can make it happen! Every donation will be highly appreciated. If you find the information useful and would like to support our team in integrating further features, write great content, and in upgrading our soft- and hardware, please make a donation (PayPal or Online credit card payment).

Planned features:
  • Improved multilanguage support
  • Tsunami alerts
  • Faster responsiveness
Thanks to your past donations, these features have been added recently:
  • Design upgrade
  • Detailed quake stats
  • Additional seismic data sources
Download and Upgrade the Volcanoes & Earthquakes app to get one of the fastest seismic and volcano alerts online:
Android | IOS
