Significant 6.1 quake hits near Hualien City, Hualien, Taiwan

6.1 quake 9 May 3:23 pm (GMT +9)
6.1 quake 9 May 3:23 pm (GMT +9)
The German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) reported a magnitude 6.1 quake in Japan near Hualien City, Hualien, Taiwan, only 13 minutes ago. The earthquake hit early afternoon on Monday, May 9th, 2022, at 3:23 pm local time at a shallow depth of 10 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from France's Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.8. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 6.5.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Yonakuni (pop. 1,700) located 73 km from the epicenter, Hualien City (pop. 350,500) 91 km away, Yilan (pop. 94,200) 114 km away, and Keelung (pop. 397,500) 148 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you're in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
