7.2 quake Near Quito, Pichincha, Ecuador, May 26, 2022 7:02 am (GMT -5)
The United States Geological Survey reported a magnitude 7.2 quake in Peru near Ayaviri, Provincia de Melgar, Puno, only 16 minutes ago. The earthquake hit in the morning on Thursday, May 26th, 2022, at 7:02 am local time at an intermediate to considerable depth of 212 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, which listed it as a magnitude 7.2 earthquake as well. Other agencies reporting the same quake include Geoscience Australia (GeoAu) at magnitude 6.9, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 7.0, and the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 6.9.
Generally quakes of this magnitude are recorded by more than one agency and the results can vary, with subsequent reports that come in after the first one often showing more accuracy.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should have been widely felt by almost everyone in the area of the epicenter. It might have caused light to moderate damage.
Moderate shaking probably occurred in Tirapata (pop. 690) located 5 km from the epicenter, Ayaviri (pop. 19,300) 24 km away, Azangaro (pop. 13,300) 24 km away, and Lampa (pop. 4,800) 39 km away.
In Juliaca (pop. 245,700) located 63 km from the epicenter, Atuncolla (pop. 12,700) 81 km away, Puno (pop. 116,600) 102 km away, and La Rinconada (pop. 29,700) 110 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you're in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
