Magnitude 6.0 earthquake strikes near Monkayo, Compostela Valley, Davao, Philippines

6.0 quake 1 Feb 6:44 pm (GMT +8)
The United States Geological Survey reported a magnitude 6.0 quake in the Philippines near Monkayo, Compostela Valley, Davao, 30 minutes ago. The earthquake hit early evening on Wednesday, February 1st, 2023, at 6:44 pm local time at a shallow depth of 13.5 km. Magnitude and other quake parameters can still change in the coming hours as the agency continues to process seismic data.
A second report was later issued by The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS), which listed it as a magnitude 6.0 earthquake as well. Other agencies reporting the same quake include Geoscience Australia (GeoAu) at magnitude 6.1, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 6.1, Italy's National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) at magnitude 6.1, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) at magnitude 6.1, France's Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS) at magnitude 5.9, the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 6.0, and the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 6.0.
Generally quakes of this magnitude are recorded by more than one agency and the results can vary, with subsequent reports that come in after the first one often showing more accuracy.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should have been felt by everybody in the area of the epicenter. In those areas, dangerous ground shaking occurred with the potential to inflict moderate to heavy damage to buildings and other infrastructure.
Towns or cities where the quake likely caused strong ground shaking include
Moderate shaking probably occurred in Compostela (pop. 42,600) located 13 km from the epicenter, Nabunturan (pop. 16,700) 21 km away, Trento (pop. 15,900) 30 km away, San Mariano (pop. 18,700) 31 km away, New Corella (pop. 20,600) 32 km away, Veruela (pop. 18,100) 34 km away, and Magugpo Poblacion (pop. 233,300) 45 km away.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you're in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
