An earthquake of magnitude 5.6 occurred late at night on Saturday, February 4th, 2023, at 10:02 pm local time near La Serena, Elqui, Coquimbo Region, Chile, as reported by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ).
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a moderately shallow depth of 67 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, which listed it as a magnitude 5.6 earthquake as well. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 5.6.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In La Serena (pop. 154,500) located 35 km from the epicenter, and Coquimbo (pop. 161,300) 41 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Vicuña (pop. 13,500) located 75 km from the epicenter, Ovalle (pop. 77,100) 113 km away, Vallenar (pop. 44,900) 124 km away, and Monte Patria (pop. 13,900) 127 km away.
