Significant magnitude 6.0 quake hits 82 km northwest of Wellington, New Zealand early evening

6.0 quake 15 Feb 7:38 pm (GMT +13)
6.0 quake 15 Feb 7:38 pm (GMT +13)
An earthquake of magnitude 6.0 occurred early evening on Wednesday, February 15th, 2023, at 7:38 pm local time near Wellington, Wellington City, New Zealand, as reported by New Zealand's Earthquake Commission and Geological Survey (GeoNet).
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a moderately shallow depth of 57.4 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by Italy's National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV), which listed it as a magnitude 5.6 earthquake. Other agencies reporting the same quake include France's Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS) at magnitude 6.0, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 6.0, and the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 5.8.
Generally quakes of this magnitude are recorded by more than one agency and the results can vary, with subsequent reports that come in after the first one often showing more accuracy.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Te Horo (pop. 700) located 52 km from the epicenter, Paraparaumu (pop. 30,600) 54 km away, Levin (pop. 19,800) 60 km away, Porirua (pop. 50,900) 67 km away, Upper Hutt (pop. 38,400) 75 km away, Lower Hutt (pop. 101,200) 78 km away, Whanganui (pop. 40,300) 81 km away, Wellington (pop. 381,900) 82 km away, Wainuiomata (pop. 19,400) 84 km away, and Palmerston North (pop. 76,000) 91 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you're in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.

Support us - Help us upgrade our services!

We truly love working to bring you the latest volcano and earthquake data from around the world. Maintaining our website and our free apps does require, however, considerable time and resources.
We need financing to increase hard- and software capacity as well as support our editor team. We're aiming to achieve uninterrupted service wherever an earthquake or volcano eruption unfolds, and your donations can make it happen! Every donation will be highly appreciated. If you find the information useful and would like to support our team in integrating further features, write great content, and in upgrading our soft- and hardware, please make a donation (PayPal or Online credit card payment).

Planned features:
  • Improved multilanguage support
  • Tsunami alerts
  • Faster responsiveness
Thanks to your past donations, these features have been added recently:
  • Design upgrade
  • Detailed quake stats
  • Additional seismic data sources
Download and Upgrade the Volcanoes & Earthquakes app to get one of the fastest seismic and volcano alerts online:
Android | IOS
