Significant magnitude 6.1 quake hits 67 km southeast of Kushiro, Japan late at night

6.1 quake 25 Feb 11:27 pm (GMT +10)
6.1 quake 25 Feb 11:27 pm (GMT +10)
A moderately shallow magnitude 6.1 earthquake was reported late at night near Kushiro, Kushiro Shi, Hokkaido, Japan.
According to the United States Geological Survey, the quake hit on Saturday, February 25th, 2023, at 11:27 pm local time at a moderately shallow depth of 42.9 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS) which listed the quake at magnitude 6.1 as well. Other agencies reporting the same quake include Geoscience Australia (GeoAu) at magnitude 6.1, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 6.1, Italy's National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) at magnitude 6.1, France's Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS) at magnitude 5.9, the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 6.1, and Japan's National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience (NIED) at magnitude 6.5.
Generally quakes of this magnitude are recorded by more than one agency and the results can vary, with subsequent reports that come in after the first one often showing more accuracy.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Kushiro (pop. 183,600) located 67 km from the epicenter, Nemuro (pop. 31,200) 73 km away, Shibetsu (pop. 21,700) 101 km away, and Motomachi (pop. 23,000) 146 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you're in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
