Significant magnitude 5.7 quake hits 81 km east of Juchitan de Zaragoza, Mexico late at night

5.7 quake 1 Mar 10:40 pm (GMT -6)
5.7 quake 1 Mar 10:40 pm (GMT -6)
A magnitude 5.7 earthquake near Juchitan de Zaragoza, Heroica Ciudad de Juchitán de Zaragoza, Oaxaca, Mexico, was reported only 25 minutes ago by the United States Geological Survey, considered one of the key international agencies that monitor seismic activity worldwide. The earthquake occurred at an intermediate depth of 87.7 km beneath the epicenter late at night on Wednesday, March 1st, 2023, at 10:40 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.7 as well. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 6.0, Italy's National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) at magnitude 5.9, France's Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS) at magnitude 5.8, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 5.7, and the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 5.7.
Generally quakes of this magnitude are recorded by more than one agency and the results can vary, with subsequent reports that come in after the first one often showing more accuracy.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In San Pedro Tapanatepec (pop. 7,400) located 8 km from the epicenter, Chahuites (pop. 9,800) 11 km away, and Arriaga (pop. 24,400) 41 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Tonala (pop. 35,300) located 62 km from the epicenter, Cintalapa de Figueroa (pop. 42,500) 69 km away, Juchitan de Zaragoza (pop. 74,800) 81 km away, Ixtepec (pop. 25,400) 92 km away, and Tuxtla Gutiérrez (pop. 537,100) 131 km away.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you're in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
