Monterey's earthquake earlier today at a very noticeable magnitude of 4.3 sent shockwaves through the region's inhabitants, literally. The uncharacteristically very shallow quake of barely 4 miles below the surface caused a flurry of comments to flood our VolcanoDiscovery monitoring service. Messages came in from a wide range of neighborhoods, communities and towns around Monterrey including Aptos, Ben Lomond, Boulder, Carmel, Corralitos, Hollister, Marina, Newman, Salinas, Santa Cruz, Sand City, Soquel, Watsonville, and many more. Read more...Users reported feelings of a "passing truck", cracks, rumbling, rattling and shaking lasting anywhere between 2 and 30 seconds, often in two different waves. Many felt a rolling movement rather than the classical left-right shaking. Luckily no significant damage or injuries were reported to us. [ less] read all

Earthquakes under Etna volcano during 31 Dec 2020-2Jan 2021
A series of earthquakes shook the flanks of Etna volcano during the past days. Since the afternoon of 31 Dec 2020 until this morning, a swarm of tremors has occurred at depths of 10-15 km mainly under the southern flank of the volcano. Read more...A total of almost 40 quakes of magnitudes of up to 3.8 have been recorded, most of them on 31 Dec and early 1 Jan. The strongest quakes were widely felt by people living on the southern slopes of Etna. There are no signs that that these quakes have affected the activity at the summit craters, which has been calming down gradually, and seems to consist only of sporadic (if any) weak strombolian activity and some ash emissions from the New SE crater and, to lesser extent, the Voragine central crater.

Location of users reporting this morning's quake in San Francisco San Francisco's earthquake earlier today jolted the city's residents out of bed at 5:41 am, with hundreds of live reports flowing into our online monitoring service at VolcanoDiscovery within minutes after it occurred. Most users classified the intensity as a 3 or 4 on the 12-point Modified Mercalli Scale, considered the most common intensity scale used in seismology. Read more...Reports have come in from all over the city and its surroundings, including Nob Hill, Muir Beach, Sausalito, Castro, San Rafael, Mill valley, Tiburon, Twin Peaks, Napa, Tam Valley, Alameda, Fairfax, Novato, Oakhill, Berkeley, Larkspur and many other areas. Many users described the sensation as garbage trucks passing in front of their homes, often accompanied by a strong bump or a boom. Some thought it was an explosion, while others reported a single big jolt. There were also reports of objects rattling but no serious damage so far. Interestingly, several online reports we received noted how dogs and cats reacted to the quake, even before it was felt by their human owners. Needless to say, hundreds of beds shook and swayed this morning with many alarmed that something or somebody was jumping on their mattress. [ less] read all

Epicenter area of today's devastating earthquake in Croatia
A massive earthquake of 6.4 on the Richter scale hit central Croatia near the town of Petrinja at 12.19 local time (GMT +1) which was felt to different degrees in several countries, including Bosnia/Herzegovina, Czechia, Croatia, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Liechtenstein, Montenegro, Slovakia, Slovenia, Serbia and Austria. Read more...Numerous reports are coming into the VolcanoDiscovery earthquake monitoring service from several countries mentioned above. Our users in Croatia’s capital, Zagreb, reported alarm, with objects falling on them and people screaming. People across Croatia perceived different durations, anywhere from 20 seconds to 1 full minute (a very long time in earthquake terms). Most of Zagreb has suffered from power outages and hospitals have been evacuated. According to local news website INDEXHR the police have called on people to close their gas mains and limit the use of private vehicles. Images from the quake show debris in the streets from buildings, traffic jams and tram cars that have stopped due to electricity cuts. There are reports of deaths in Petrinja close to the earthquake’s epicenter, along with reports of general panic among the town’s inhabitants and many collapsed structures in the area. In neighboring Slovenia, authorities have even shut down the Krsko nuclear power plant. Beyond the capital Zagreb, people in Croatian cities including Split, Vukovar and Rijeka were also very affected. [ less] read all
