South Bend, Indiana USA (12833.6 km SW from epicenter) / MMI II (Very weak shaking): While setting in a rocking chair, the chair was shaking back & forth for probably 15-20 seconds my husband was on the couch but felt nothing. After about 10 seconds it started again lasting about same length of time.
Kokopo (Papua New Guinea) (374 km NW from epicenter)(no details): Items fell, house shook violently (via EMSC)
Lae / MMI IV (Light shaking)
Dundalk, MD / MMI II (Very weak shaking): Hardly felt but was noticed.
(Papua New Guinea) (956 km W from epicenter)(no details): Gentle rocking of the office and buildings for approx 10-20sec, then reduced in intensity for 4-10eecs, followed by another 10-29secs of stronger tremors. (via EMSC)
Ijen volcano photos: Ijen volcano in East Java is famous for its turquoise acid crater lake and the large sulfur deposits that are being mined by local workers. At night, the scene is illuminated by ghostly blue flames, as sulfur ignites.
Intraplate volcanism: A third tectonic setting where volcanism occurs is believed to be the result of mantle plumes and not directly related to plate boundaries. So called hot spot volcanoes fall into this category.
