Papaikou / MMI IV (Light shaking): Woke us up -- shook the bed and walls for about two seconds -- we thought it was a large animal like a cow ramming the outside of our house! -- decided it probably was an earthquake -- went back to sleep.

Fern Forest 20 miles south of Hilo / MMI V (Moderate shaking): Sleeping in a treehouse for our honeymoon. Woke up when the complete house was shaking. Couldn’t hear any birds. My husband told me that they calmed down a few seconds before the tremor. The tremor was accompanied by a rumbling. Then birds began to tweet again.

Hakalau / MMI IV (Light shaking): First time feeling something like this. New on the island. Was scared that something was going to fall on my head.
