A magnitude 5.2 earthquake hit 120 km north-east of Whangamata off New Zealand's North Island earlier today, at 3:47 am local time.
It was widely felt as weak tremor along the NE coast of the North Island, including the capital Auckland. Many people who were in their beds noticed a brief, mild shaking, often as rolling motion. Most user reports felt it for approx. 5-10 seconds although some could feel very weak vibrations for as long as 20-30 seconds.
The quake was far enough from the coast to cause no damage and too weak to pose any tsunami risk.
