Moderately strong magnitude 5.7 quake hits New Zealand's South Island
New Zealand was hit by a mag 5.7 quake 3 Sep 2020 evening
New Zealand was hit by a mag 5.7 quake 3 Sep 2020 evening
A moderately strong earthquake hit New Zealand's northern South Island 15 minutes ago at 10:13 pm local time.
The quake at 62 km depth had its epicenter 10 km west of the small mountain town St. Arnaud, southwest of Nelson. Light to moderate shaking was felt by thousands of people in a vast area across the northern half of the South Island and much of the southern North Island. In areas near the epicenter, moderate to strong shaking occurred with the potential to cause at least light damage, while the relatively large depth of the quake should have attenuated the shaking on ground to levels that would not cause major damage.
Within 15 minutes, more than 25,000 people reported the shaking to the New Zealand's Geonet national earthquake agency. The quake could probably have been felt by a good part of New Zealand's population.
