This morning's quake near Lefkada island, Greece, and locations of users who reported to have felt it
A light earthquake shook the popular Greek holiday island of Lefkada this morning at 08:10 am local time, waking up many people.
According to Athens'National Observatory, the quake had a magnitude of 4.1 and occurred at 16 km depth. It was too weak to pose any risk, but in a radius of 10-20 km from the epicenter 14 km SW of Lefkada town, it could be clearly felt as a short rattling movement.
A second quake of similar magnitude occurred in the same area 11 minutes later.
In Albania, a similar quake of magnitude 4.1had occurred earlier during the night. It also was widely felt, but did not cause any damage.
Earthquakes along the Ionian Islands on the western coast of Greece and southern Albania are very common, as this area sits above a very active transform fault (the Cephalonia Transform Fault), separating the Adriatic and Aegean subplates. Larger earthquakes of magnitudes up to 6-7 occur in this area every few years to decades.
In recent years, the largest quake in the same area was a strong magnitude 6.3 quake on 17 Nov 2015 just a few km to the west of today's quakes.
