Light earthquake of magnitude 4.8 reported 125 Km ESE of Chignik, Alaska, USA
A magnitude 4.8 earthquake 41 minutes ago was reported by the United States Geological Survey (USGS), considered the key international and national agency that monitors seismic activity in the US. The earthquake occurred at shallow depth of 14.9 km (9.3 mi) beneath the epicenter. Magnitude and other quake parameters can still change within the next hours as the agency continues to process the seismic data.
Our monitoring service at VolcanoDiscovery also identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.1.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Towns and cities near the epicenter that are likely to be affected include Ouzinkie (pop. 200) in 104 km (65 mi) distance with weak shaking expected according to preliminary calculations, Kodiak (pop. 6,300) in 109 km (68 mi) distance (weak shaking expected), Port Graham (pop. 200) in 113 km (70 mi) distance (weak shaking expected), Homer (pop. 5,500) in 138 km (86 mi) distance (weak shaking expected).
This story will be updated soon by VolcanoDiscovery. If you're in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
