3.5 quake: Bosnia And Herzegovina, Bosnia & Herzegovina, 23 Oct 2020 14:08
Just 1 hour and 37 minutes ago in the afternoon on Friday 23 October at 4.08 pm local time, a 3.5-magnitude earthquake struck near the town of Vitina, Bosnia & Herzegovina, with a recorded depth of 5 km below the surface, considered very shallow in seismological terms.
The event was filed by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the first seismological agency to report it.
Our monitoring service at VolcanoDiscovery identified a second report from Italy's National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) which listed the quake at magnitude 3.7.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows etc.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt, based on preliminary calculations, include Vitina (pop. 4,400) at a distance of 2 km with very weak shaking. In Ljubuški (pop. 10,000, 8 km away), Split (pop. 176,300, 88 km away), and Sarajevo (pop. 696,700, 98 km away), the quake could probably not be felt.
