An earthquake of magnitude 4.5 occurred 1 hour and 4 minutes ago 114 km south of Kalamata, Greece, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported. The quake hit at a very shallow depth of 2 km beneath the epicenter in the morning on Saturday 24 October at 10.50 am local time. Magnitude and other quake parameters can still change within the next hours as the agency continues to process seismic data.
A second report was later issued by the National Observatory of Athens (NOA) agency, which listed it as a magnitude 3.9 earthquake. A third agency, the United States Geological Survey (USGS), reported the same quake at magnitude 4.5.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Towns or cities near the epicenter that are likely to be affected include Koróni (pop. 1,600) at a distance of 86 km with weak shaking, Methóni (pop. 1,200) at a distance of 92 km with weak shaking, Kalamata (pop. 54,100) at a distance of 114 km with very weak shaking, and Trípoli (pop. 26,600) at a distance of 169 km with very weak shaking.
