An earthquake of magnitude 4.8 occurred around noon on Wednesday 28 October at 1.49 pm local time near the town of Sumberpucung, Indonesia, as reported by Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency (BMKG). According to preliminary data, the quake was located at an intermediate depth of 43 km. Magnitude and other quake parameters can still change in the coming hours as the agency continues to process seismic data.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Towns or cities near the epicenter that are likely to be affected include Sumberpucung (pop. 35,300) at a distance of 60 km with weak shaking, Gongdanglegi Kulon (pop. 22,500) at a distance of 64 km with weak shaking, Malang (pop. 746,700) at a distance of 83 km with weak shaking, and Surabaya (pop. 2,374,700) at a distance of 165 km with very weak shaking.
