4.9 quake: 116 km N of Neiafu, Tonga, 29 Oct 2020 18:45
An earthquake of magnitude 4.9 occurred 1 hour and 12 minutes ago 116 km north of Neiafu, Tonga, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported. The quake hit at a relatively great depth of 146 km beneath the epicenter in the morning on Friday 30 October 2020 at 7.45 am local time. Magnitude and other quake parameters can still change in the coming hours as the agency continues to process seismic data.
A second report was later issued by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) agency, which listed it as a magnitude 4.9 earthquake as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt, based on preliminary calculations, include Neiafu (pop. 4,300) at a distance of 116 km with weak shaking.
