Just 6 minutes ago, a 4.1-magnitude earthquake struck near the town of Zaruma, Ecuador. The tremor was recorded early morning on Friday 30 October 2020 at 3.03 am local time, at an intermediate depth of 56 km below the surface.
The event was filed by the Institute of Geophysics of the National Polytechnic School in Quito (IGEPN), the first seismological agency to report it.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt, based on preliminary calculations, include Zaruma (pop. 12,500) at a distance of 14 km with weak shaking, Portovelo (pop. 9,700) at a distance of 17 km with weak shaking, Machala (pop. 198,100) at a distance of 57 km with very weak shaking, and Cuenca (pop. 277,000) at a distance of 98 km with very weak shaking.
