3.3 quake 9.4 mi SE of Lincoln, Montana, 30 Oct 6.22 am (GMT -6)
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported a magnitude 3.3 quake in Montana near the town of Lincoln 1 hour and 56 minutes ago. The earthquake shook early morning on Friday 30 October 2020 at 6.22 am local time at a shallow depth of 7.8 miles. Magnitude and other quake parameters can still change in the coming hours as the agency continues to process seismic data.
Our monitoring service at VolcanoDiscovery identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 3.3 as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt, based on preliminary calculations, include Lincoln (pop. 1000) at a distance of 9 miles with weak shaking, Helena Valley Northwest (pop. 3,500) at a distance of 24 miles with very weak shaking, Helena Valley West Central (pop. 7,900) at a distance of 26 miles with very weak shaking, and Helena (pop. 30,600) at a distance of 30 miles with very weak shaking.
