An earthquake of magnitude 4.6 occurred 1 hour and 32 minutes ago 103 km southwest of Liberia, Costa Rica, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported. The quake hit at a very shallow depth of 3 km beneath the epicenter in the morning on Friday 30 October 2020 at 8.13 am local time. Magnitude and other quake parameters can still change in the coming hours as the agency continues to process seismic data.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Towns or cities near the epicenter that are likely to be affected include Sardinal (pop. 3,300) at a distance of 77 km with weak shaking, Santa Cruz (pop. 12,300) at a distance of 79 km with weak shaking, Nicoya (pop. 15,300) at a distance of 95 km with weak shaking, and Liberia (pop. 45,400) at a distance of 103 km with weak shaking.
