An earthquake of magnitude 4.7 occurred early morning on Saturday 31 October 2020 at 4.01 am local time near the town of Tari, Papua New Guinea, as reported by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC). According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a shallow depth of 10 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The magnitude, exact epicenter location and depth of the quake are likely to be revised within the next few hours as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Towns or cities near the epicenter that are likely to be affected include Tari (pop. 8,200) at a distance of 97 km with weak shaking, and Kiunga (pop. 11,500) at a distance of 121 km with weak shaking.
