4.8 quake Banda Sea, Indonesia, 31 Oct 4.04 am (GMT +9)
A shallow magnitude 4.8 earthquake was reported early morning near the city of Ambon, Indonesia.
According to Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency (BMKG), the quake hit on Saturday 31 October 2020 at 4.04 am local time at a shallow depth of 10 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. Magnitude and other quake parameters can still change in the coming hours as the agency continues to process seismic data.
Our monitoring service at VolcanoDiscovery identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.8 as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Towns or cities near the epicenter that are likely to be affected include Ambon (pop. 355,600) at a distance of 119 km with weak shaking.
This story will be updated soon by VolcanoDiscovery. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
